this was the first 'friend' that came on supporting daniel johnston at his gig last week, jad fair. now i don't really know that much about daniel, i know he's pretty old, he's pretty crazy, and he has a weird voice. when this guy came on and started playing i thought, he sounds a little different to the records, but he is old and crazy. then when he finished he introduced the next act by saying that the great thing about these shows was that he got to watch a bunch of other really talented artists. he then sat on a chair on the side of the stage and watched everyone else play, occasionally looking around and talking to himself. finally he came back to the mic and said to the audience 'i know a bunch of really great musicians but only one genius, ladies and gentlemen: daniel johnston'. and i thought, jesus he really is nuts, he's introducing himself. then daniel came out and i felt suitably ashamed and stupid. that was until after the gig when i found out my friends thought the exact same thing. maybe that means we're all stupid.
