my recent trip to switzerland was in the german speaking part of the country - a language which i can't get to grips with at all. for example determining the location of this shot involved me searching for some time on google maps and cross referencing it with other images i had taken and googled. the result - a place called belchen - isn't a long or complicated word, but a word which doesn't stick in my head the way english or spanish words do. i guess that's because english is my native language and spanish has a relatively simple set of rules regarding word construction and pronunciation. german on the other hand just baffles me. mark twain posited, in his amusing essay the awful german language, that surely there is not another language that is so slipshod and systemless, and so slippery and elusive to the grasp. so i imagine i'll just continue to struggle with my ignorance and forgetfulness.

i liked the strong, vivid colours that the intermittent sun revealed here - but i also liked the result when i desaturated the colours - so i've included a black and white version
